Welcome to the third installment of the Lose Your Mind Development newsletter. There is a
lot of activity going on with Printer's Apprentice and FontReview, so let's get right down
II. SETUP PROBLEMS IN PRINTER'S APPRENTICE
More than a few Printer's Apprentice customers have emailed us about setup problems in
version 6.53. I want to address this problem directly and let you know of our plans to
remedy the situation.Sometimes Printer's Apprentice does not run correctly because the
proper system files are not in place or another software package has written over our
files with older versions. Because we use ActiveX components, any number of setup problems
can occur. To reduce the chance of you encountering these types of problems, we are taking
the following steps:
1) The next version of Printer's Apprentice is being
recompiled with Visual Basic 5.0 for greater compatibility with the system files shipped
with Office 97 and Internet Explorer 4.0.
2) We are working to reduce the number of ActiveX
components used by our products. This reduces the chance that components will conflict
with each other or crash.
3) Printer's Apprentice will incorporate technology from
Desaware, Inc. that will give PA better component detection and reporting functions.
Reporting will be used if PA cannot load and will help our tech support staff diagnose the
We are very excited about the Desaware technology. Here is how it works. When Printer's
Apprentice loads, it checks your system against its own internal list of required
components. For example, PA might require version 5.01 of COMCTL32.OCX. The PA setup
program will install this file on your machine. But some other application might install
version 5.00 over the newer file. The next time you run PA, it will note this problem and
prompt you to reinstall Printer's Apprentice. From what we have seen, we think this will
really make PA an even better program.
All of these enhancements will be built into the 6.54
maintenance release. We are taking these steps to better serve our customers and to
provide a superior product. -- Bryan

IV. PRINTER'S APPRENTICE MENTIONED IN INFOWORLD
Brian Livingston writes the "Windows Manager" column for Infoworld. In the
September 29, 1997 column he takes a look at shareware font management solutions for
Windows 95. He compares FontFinder from Maverick Land & Cattle, Co., FontFinder32 from
Sunshine Software, TTFPlus from Watermark Software and Printer's Apprentice.
We are very pleased that Mr. Livingston had the following
to say about Printer's Apprentice.
"The winner, in my opinion, is a venerable standard:
Printer's Apprentice. It's easily worth the $25 registration fee requested and you get a
15-day free trial period." He also provides the following font-related links:
